Gorakhpur Violence Case: Infant Battles for Life in ICU, NCW Seeks Action Report from SSP; No Arrest Yet

A deeply disturbing case of alleged domestic violence and dowry-related abuse has emerged from the Sikriganj police station area of Gorakhpur district, raising serious concerns about law enforcement response and the safety of the victim’s family.

According to the family of the victim, Neha Tiwari, she had been subjected to continuous physical assault, mental harassment, and pressure for a dowry of approximately ₹1 lakh since her marriage in 2020. The family further alleges that the violence intensified after the birth of two daughters, the younger of whom is about one year old.

Relatives claim that during the course of the abuse, the accused husband, Chandan Tiwari, allegedly threw the infant forcefully, causing a severe head injury. The child is currently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at AIIMS Gorakhpur, where she continues to fight for her life. The family says they remain in deep trauma, fear, and insecurity due to the child’s critical condition.

The situation reportedly escalated on *28 January 2026, when members of Neha Tiwari’s maternal family reached the location to check on her condition and were allegedly subjected to a life-threatening assault, resulting in multiple injuries. Following these events, an **FIR was registered on 29 January 2026* at Sikriganj police station against Chandan Tiwari and his family members.

Despite the registration of the FIR, the victim’s family alleges that *no arrests or effective police action* have taken place even after several days, raising questions about the pace and fairness of the investigation. The family has demanded an impartial probe, immediate arrest of the accused, and protection for themselves.

In a significant development, the matter has now reached the *National Commission for Women (NCW). Taking cognizance of the complaint, **NCW Member Mamta Kumari* has directed the *Senior Superintendent of Police, Gorakhpur, to take appropriate legal action and submit an **Action Taken Report (ATR)* to the Commission within the stipulated time frame.

However, the family maintains that *no concrete action has yet been visible at the local level*, leaving them feeling helpless and without a clear path to justice. They have appealed to the administration for urgent humanitarian and legal intervention.
